Brazilian Butt Lift: See Why This Buttocks Enhancement Operation Is Risky

Times are changing, so also are beauty standards.

Surgeries have become the latest trend for achieving desired physical looks.

In recent times, a good number of celebrities and public figures have gone under the knife to secure curvier or sexier bodies. They later use social media to advertised their new curvaceous body.

All these factors together contributes to the rise globally in popularity - both positive and negative – of the cosmetic operation known as Brazilian Butt Lift, also known as BBL.

In Nigeria, a legion of women now aspire to acquire new bodies through BBL.

This has led to an increase in the number of healthcare facilities offering this service.

Some of these facilities impose steep fees, while others are startlingly cheap. All of these are done merely to satisfy the growing and overwhelming demands by women for the service.

While the operation done on some people may appear excellent and successful, that is not always the case for other people.

In this article, we will provide a brief summary of how the surgery operates as well as the risks involved.

By making our readers aware of these dangers, we hope they will be better prepared to make a decision about whether or not to have this operation.

What is BBL?

First off, there is no connection between the term Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) and the Brazilian culture.

Additionally, it does not imply that the surgery lifts the buttocks.

The name was chosen to honour the Brazilian surgeon who first carried out the procedure.

A Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is a cosmetic surgery that changes the size and shape of a person’s buttocks.

The procedure involves removing fat from parts of the patient’s body. The Fat cells are removed via liposuction from either the abdomen, hips, thighs, or lower back.

The fat is then purified and injected into the patient’s buttocks to increase the size and improve the shape, and to leave the buttocks with a plumper appearance.

This is Why BBL is Potentially Dangerous

All surgical procedures carry risks. Any doctor who tells you otherwise is dishonest.

BBL is often thought to be “harmless” by plastic surgeons, however, there have been an endless stream of news reports and articles about deaths associated with Brazilian Butt Lift. Just Google “BBL gone wrong”.

Infections, stretch marks, and bruising are all potential side effects of a BBL procedure.

Blood clots, cardiac (heart) problems, and fat embolism are some of the most dangerous concerns associated with BBL procedures.

In fat embolism, this is when fat that had been injected into the buttocks enters the bloodstream and blocks the lungs and then puts so much strain on the heart that the heart fails.

In a survey that was conducted in 2017 involving almost 700 doctors around the globe, doctors reported over 30 fatalities (deaths) from the surgery.

According to the survey, pulmonary fat embolisms was the cause of  the majority of these BBL deaths.

This shows that BBL surgery has a greater fatality rate than any other cosmetic procedure, including tummy tucks, which were once thought to be the riskiest.

How Fat Embolism Kills

During a BBL procedure, fat is transferred into the buttocks with a long cannula —a thin, straw-like tube— that is inserted under the skin.

If the surgeon is inexperienced or does not have a good sense of anatomy and goes too deep into the muscle, the fat can end up injuring the superior and inferior gluteal arteries.

These blood vessels are directly connected to the heart, so if they become damaged and fat enters them, it may travel to the heart and lungs and cause the patient to die right away.

It is definitely scary stuff.

Other Side Effects

The other side effects of a Brazilian Butt Lift treatment are often minor and manageable. They include:

Infection

Medically speaking, infection is a possibility, especially if the fat is not sterilized before being passed into the buttocks.

It is also very important that the surgery is carried out in a hospital or other accredited facility where the medical staff are properly trained and take the necessary precautions to maintain proper sanitary condition.

Botched BBL

Botched BBL

You may have seen an example of a botched BBL. These are situations where the result of the operation is not what you expected, that is, the new buttocks is not aesthetically pleasing.

This can happen when not enough fat has been removed or added, or there are irregularities in the contour, such as different-sized butt cheeks or bumps and divots along the buttocks.

Using inexperienced or otherwise unqualified doctors are more likely to cause this to happen.

Conclusion

A BBL-enhanced buttocks might be visually appealing, but the dangers and risks in getting it are just not worth it.

However, we can’t decide for you, but if you decide to proceed with this type of cosmetic surgery, we do hope that you take these risks into account.

I wish you luck!
