Where is Veteran Actress, Barbara Soky?

Barbara Soky captivated millions of Nigerians during her appearance on the 1980s TV soap opera “Mirror in the Sun.”

She was young, hot, and savvy, and she exuded a personality that made her the toast of the viewing public.

Beyond her acting career, Soky dined with the rich and famous.

She was also a regular feature in gossip columns. For example, her romantic relationship with Danladi Bako, a former NTA broadcaster who later became the Director-GeneralGeneral of the National Broadcasting Commission, was widely publicized. The circumstances surrounding the birth of her daughter, Maxine, were also the subject of gossip columns.

Soky (born Bara Sokoroma) debuted as an actress in the early 1980s. Her first major role was as Rosemary Hart, an office receptionist, in the NTA Port Harcourt series “Inside Out.”

Soky also appeared in the series “You Can’t Take Your Wife to New York,” which followed a Nigerian ambassador and his illiterate wife.

After “Inside Out,” the Rivers State native relocated to Lagos to star in Lola Fani-serial Kayode’s “Mirror in the Sun.” The series ran from January 1984 to January 1986.

Her appearance in the popular soap opera catapulted her to national prominence. Her popularity landed her a role in a Jik bleach commercial.

Soky released the music album “Going Places” on Mercury Records in 1986.

Soky was a member of the original cast of Zeb Ejiro’s Ripples, where she played city lawyer Daphne Wellington-Cole. The soap opera ran from 1988 to 1993.

Then, all of a sudden, Soky vanished from the public and television scene.

“Well, it was necessary for me to go on that break because I had gotten to a stage where I felt that I needed a break, it was purely personal,” she explained of her lengthy absence from public view.

“At that point, I knew I had to take that break because so many things were happening at the same time, and it was starting to affect me as a person,” she explained.

Soky, the consummate actress, returned to acting in 2004 after a 13-year hiatus.

Apart from featuring in the Amaka Igwe production Solitaire as Nkoyo Broderick, Soky featured in Wale Adenuga Production’s comedies -‘The Super Story’, ‘This Life’ and ‘Odd World’.

She has also featured in Nollywood films such as ‘Saviour’; ‘Mission To No Where,” and ‘My Desire’, etc. She also acted in some soap operas such as the late Amaka Igwe’s ‘Tempest’ and ‘Secret and Scandals’.

At the 2013 Nollywood Movies Awards, veteran actress Soky was named Best Actress in a Supporting Role. This award was given to her for her performance in the film Bridge of Hope.

At the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2014, she received the same nomination for her role in the film Brothers Keeper.
