These female rappers held it down at some point in Hip-hop history.

They gave us some of best rap albums that ever got recorded. These female emcees amassed incredible fame, fortunes and in some cases – controversies.

In all of these, many of them lead lifestyles that make it appear as though they are exempted from punishment.

This feature is about four prominent female rappers who have done some time in jail.

This list also goes to show that the law is no respecter of gender.

 

Foxy Brown

Foxy Brown, real name Inga Marchand, was born on September 6, 1978, and has been arrested and convicted of multiple assault charges.

Foxy Brown was sentenced to one year in prison by a New York Criminal Court judge on September 7, 2007. Her crime was violating her probation for a fight in 2004 wherein she threw a Blackberry phone at someone and attacked two manicurists in a New York City nail salon.

Brown was released after completing eight months of her one-year sentence.

 

Da Brat

In 2007, the funkdafied rapper, Da Brat, was jailed for assaulting a waitress.

She received a three-year prison sentence, seven years of probation, and 200 hours of community service.

She was temporarily released from prison in May 2010 as part of a work-release program after serving 21 months.

Jermaine Dupri, her former producer and record label boss, announced Da Brat’s official release from prison on February 28, 2011, completing her sentence.

 

 

Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill is widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time, as well as one of her generation’s most influential singers.

She pleaded guilty to tax evasion in 2012. The following year, the record producer, actress, and former Fugees member was convicted of tax evasion. She was sentenced to three months in prison and one year on probation.

Lauryn Hill was sentenced to three months of home confinement and a year of supervised probation after her release in October 2013. She was also ordered to pay penalties and back taxes. Hill’s lawyer stated that she had since paid all of her taxes.

 

Remy Ma

Remy Ma was discovered by Big Pun, but she rose to prominence as a member of Fat Joe’s group, Terror Squad.

In July 2007, Remy was arrested for allegedly shooting at a Manhattan night club.

Remy Ma was imprisoned for six years for assault, illegal weapon possession, and attempted coercion.

She released the mixtapes The “BX Files”, “Shesus Khryst”, and “Blasremy” while incarcerated. In May 2008, Remy married her fiancée, rapper Papoose, while incarcerated.

Remy, real name Reminisce Mackie, was released from prison on August 1, 2014, after serving six years.

 

 Lil’ Kim

Kimberly Jones, better known as Lil’ Kim, was convicted of three counts of conspiracy and one count of perjury on March 17, 2005.

She lied to a federal grand jury about the involvement of her co-manager, Damion “D-Roc” Butler, and bodyguard Suif “Gutta” Jackson in a shooting outside the Hot 97 studios in Manhattan in 2001. She testified that she had no idea they were on the scene.

However, security camera footage showed all three of them leaving the building. This directly contradicted the grand jury’s testimony.

Lil’ Kim was sentenced to one year in prison, thirty days home detention upon release from custody, and three years probation in July 2005.

On July 3, 2006, the rapper, songwriter, actress, model, and reality television personality was released after serving about a year in prison. She was also sentenced to $50,000 in fines for perjury.
