African Artists Break Spotify Records, Earned Big In 2024

2024 was a big year for African artists on Spotify. Nigerian musicians alone made over ₦58 billion (around $37.5 million) in royalties. That’s more than double what they made in 2023! South African artists didn’t lag too far behind, earning a cool 400 million rand (about $21 million). This is a 54% increase from the previous year, which just goes to show that African music, like Afrobeats and Amapiano, is taking over the world.

The Big Earners: Who’s Making the Most on Spotify?

Let’s talk about the money! Nigerian star Wizkid topped the charts, raking in a whopping $1 million in monthly Spotify royalties. Right behind him was Burna Boy, making $782,148, and Tems with $660,210. South African artist Tyla also made it into the top five with $607,804. Other Nigerian stars like Davido ($458,615), Asake ($451,553), Omah Lay ($421,123), Ayra Starr ($400,972), and Rema ($367,973) also got their fair share of the spoils. Who said Africa wasn’t the place for music?

Playlist Love: Nigerian Music Goes Global

Nigerian star Wizkid is the highest African earner on Spotify, he earned a whopping $1 million in monthly Spotify royalties.

Nigerian artists have truly made a global splash, with their songs appearing in over 250 million playlists. South African artists aren’t too far behind, with their tunes featured in 220 million playlists. These numbers show just how much people love African music, no matter where they are. It’s safe to say, Afrobeats and Amapiano are becoming the world’s favorite soundtracks.

But Wait—Spotify Isn’t The Whole Story!

As much as the Spotify earnings look good, they don’t tell the whole story. These royalties are just one part of the picture. Artists also make money from other platforms like Apple Music, YouTube, Boomplay, live performances, and, of course, merchandise and endorsements. So, don’t go thinking these artists are just getting rich from Spotify alone!

In 2024, South African artist Tyla earned a month sum of $607,804.

Challenges Remain: Not All Artists Are Raking It In

While a handful of African artists are swimming in Spotify earnings, the reality for most is still tough. Only about 0.6% of all artists on Spotify earned over $1 million in 2024. That means, while some are making bank, many others are still struggling to make a sustainable living from streaming alone. It’s a reminder that the streaming economy isn’t as straightforward as it might seem.

Wrapping It Up: The Bright Future of African Music

2024’s Spotify figures prove that African artists are finally getting the recognition they deserve on the global stage. The question is—how do we keep that momentum going? For a truly sustainable future, the streaming disparities need to be addressed. African talent is rich and diverse, but it needs more support to ensure that artists from all walks of life can thrive. So, let’s keep streaming, let’s keep supporting African artists, and let’s make sure they’re not just making money, but making it in a way that’s fair and sustainable! #Spotify Records # Spotify Records # Spotify Records # Spotify Records
