How Obasanjo’s Wife Was Murdered In Traffic On Valentine’s Day

It was about midday on Friday, February 14, 1987, in a commercial area of Lagos. Obasanjo’s Wife In the middle of the street, a gang of young men approached a Peugeot sedan. In the vehicle was Lynda Obasanjo, the wife of Nigeria’s former military Head-of-State,  Olusegun Obasanjo.

She was approached and asked to surrender her vehicle. Witnesses say the men shot at her after she refused to yield her car. The assailants shot the 45-year old Linda Obasanjo, Nee Soares, through her car window, then dragged her body from the vehicle and sped away. The murder was regarded as premeditated by police, who speculated that the robbers trailed Mrs. Obasanjo. They refused to go into detail but did say that a special investigation was ongoing. At the time of the incident, her husband,  Olusegun Obasanjo, was at his farm in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Olusegun Obasanjo was Nigeria’s former military head of state, state from 1976-1979. 12 years after the gruesome assassination of his wife in traffic, Obasanjo became the democratically elected president of Nigeria.
