The Mechanical engineer turned musician, Paul Play Dairo, was a phenomenon in the Nigerian music scene in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Born Paul Babatunde Dairo, he rose to prominence in the music industry when he remixed the classic song hit Mo so rire. The song is one of the evergreen songs originally produced and sung by his late father, IK Dairo.

He later followed up with other hits singles, such as; “Angel of my life”, “Forever”, “You and me”.

For his efforts, Paul Play Dairo won several music awards, including The Headies’ “Artist of The Year award”.

All these served in catapulting the singer, songwriter, and producer to superstardom.

Then all of a sudden, the multitalented entertainer faded from the Nigerian music scene.

So, what has Paul Play Dairo been up to since his triumphs in Nigeria’s music scene in the late 1990s and early 2000s?

Just as music followers were anticipating that he would surpass his father’s success, the singer disappeared from the entertainment scene for over five years. No thanks to a kidney condition that he suffered.

It all started in 2009 when Dairo traveled to South Africa with his crew to film music videos for his new album.

While in South Africa, he was diagnosed with a tumour that grew on his right kidney.  The tumor was so large that it completely engulfed his kidney, rendering it unusable to the point that it had to be removed.

Though Paul Play Dairo did not launch a campaign for public support to treat the illness, he however got assistance from Globacom chairman, Mike Adenuga, and some other people.

The operation, which was carried out at a South African hospital, was successful. However, it took him a while to recuperate, suffering depression along the way.

Still, that did not stop him from being active in the entertainment industry.

Dairo is the owner of Playground Entertainment, a company that nurtures and develops musicians for record deals. In addition, he engages in creating content for television and radio.

In 2016, he got a distribution deal with a Turkish record label. He is also involved in a production collaboration with a top Russian disc jockey, as well as another in the United Arab Emirates.

In 2020, after years of hiatus, veteran singer returns to the music scene with the remix of his mega-hit song “Angel Of My Life”. The remix features Douglas Jack Agu popularly known as Runtown. That same year, he also released the song titled, ‘Guidance’.

Dairo is currently the Chairman of LYSI Regimen Limited, a mind health and wellness firm. He is also a director of LYSI Mission Foundation. He was appointed as a director of entertainment for the Atiku Care Foundation.

Paul Play shuttles between the Nigeria and the United Kingdom where his family resides.
