We expect politicians to act morally, responsibly, and in the best interests of the public when we elect them to public office.

Unfortunately, politicians have frequently disappointed us.

For instance, nationally televised admissions of infidelity and other bad behavior by politicians seem almost commonplace now.

In advanced countries, some politicians have to leave office after such disclosures, but many are forgiven by voters.

But in Nigeria, the tolerance for such act are quite high, with some many politicians surviving sex scandals.

Indeed, politicians make mistakes too. Welcome to jojoNaija.com, and today we will be counting down ten of the most infamous political sex scandals in Nigeria.

Dan Orbih

Chief Dan Osi Orbih, the Edo State PDP Chairman, was embroiled in a nude photo scandal in May 2012.

Nude photos of Dan Orbih leaked by a woman that is believed to be a prostitute.

He allegedly took the woman to the hotel and and had sxual intercourse with her. After the act, the woman allegedly took his nude pictures while he was sleeping and later posted it on the internet.

The photos were uploaded to a Facebook page, Corruption Concern.

Mohammed Garba Gololo, Samuel Ikon, & Mark Gbillah

In 20016, during an official visit to the United States, three members of the Nigerian House of Representatives were accused of improper conducts.

The offending representatives were: Mohammed Garba Gololo (APC – Bauchi), Samuel Ikon (PDP – Akwa Ibom), and Mark Gbillah (APC – Benue).

Ten members of the Nigerian National Assembly had travelled to Cleveland, Ohio as participants in the International Visitor Leadership Program on good governance.

The three members allegedly attempted to rape a hotel housekeeper at the International Visitor Leadership Program held in Cleveland, Ohio.

Mohammed Garba Gololo allegedly grabbed a housekeeper in his hotel room and solicited her for sex.

Mark Terseer Gbillah and Samuel Ikon allegedly requested hotel parking attendants assist them to solicit prostitutes.

This allegation was made by the then-US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle. Entwistle specifically charged these men with attempted rape and solicitation of prostitutes.

He made the accusation in a letter dated June 9, 2016 and sent to then-House Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

The honourable members, however, denied the allegations and were later cleared after an investigation by the House of Representatives Ethics and Privileges Committee.

Bukar Abba Ibrahim

In 2017, Bukar Abba Ibrahim, a senator and former governor of Yobe State, was shown in a leaked viral video dressing up in the presence of two ladies in a dirty hotel room.

Ibrahim, on the other hand, claimed that he had committed no official crime and that the tape was only made public after blackmail attempts failed.

“This is a personal, private matter. What does my having been with a girl have to do with the public?

“You know the normal thing: people ask for unreasonable things, and if you deny them, they try to blackmail you if they have a way,” he said.

The senator went on to say that he owed no one an explanation because he had not been charged with any crime.

Godiya Akwashiki

In March 2019, a nude video purportedly showing then-Nasarawa Deputy Speaker and Senator Godiya Akwashiki went viral.

He was allegedly caught in the act of trying to sleep with the wife of Danladi Envuluanza, a former National Judicial Council (NJC) secretary.

In a 16-second film, the politician was stripped naked and mistreated.

Another image showed him naked in a car, with just a tattered vest.

He was hit multiple times by two persons while saying, “Sorry.”

According to a source close to the Envulanza family, Akwashiki admitted to the allegations and blamed them on the devil in his confessional statement to authorities at the Maitama police station.

He said the lawmaker got Mrs Envulanza’s number with the intention that she would help him convince her husband to support his senatorial ambition.

He phoned her and made arrangements for her to meet him at exclusive stores supermarket where he would buy the drinks they would drink at the hotel he was taking her to,” the source said.

He said unknown to the lawmaker, Envulanza didn’t travel to Jos and was aware of the plan and had been monitoring the situation.

It was after he picked her up and was taking her to a hotel that he was caught and beaten by some angry youths. He was then handed over to the police.

At Maitama police station, Godiya Akwashiki confessed to have been trying to sleep with Danladi’s wife and that he was taking her to a hotel.

Abiodun Abudu-Balogun

In January 2021, in a Facebook video, a 16-year-old secondary schoolgirl claimed that Abiodun Abudu-Balogun, the then Ogun State Commissioner of Environment, attempted to rape her.

She claimed that Abudu-Balogun conspired with her uncle and a teacher on December 31, 2020, to bring her to the commissioner’s apartment in Ita Otu, Ogun Waterside LG, under the guise that he would help her get a job as a computer operator.

When the girl refused to give in, Abudu-Balogun allegedly fondled her breasts and tried to force himself on her.

When she shouted, he allegedly put N2,000 into her hands and requested Austin, a teacher, to take her home.

The commissioner, in a signed statement, described the allegation as “political blackmail” by those he called his “adversaries.”

However, the commissioner was suspended from office pending the conclusion of an independent investigation into the allegation of sexual harassment.

Despite the fact that the teenager and her father, Melojuekun Monsuru, stated in two separate recordings that they were no longer interested in pursuing the case, the Ogun State Police Command persisted on continuing the investigation, citing it as a crime against the state.

Godswill Akpabio

iN 2020, Joy Nunieh, the former Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), claimed that she slapped Godswill Akpabio, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, for sexually assaulting her.

During an interview, she claimed the event occurred in his Abuja guest house.

“Why did he not tell Nigerians that I slapped him in his guest house at Apo? I am the only Ogoni woman, the only Nigerian woman that has slapped him. I slapped him because of his plan B. Since he couldn’t get me to take that money, he thought that he could come up on me,” she had said.

“He didn’t know that I’m a Port Harcourt girl. Port Harcourt girls are not moved by money…by somebody telling me that he will make me the substantive MD. Akpabio’s meetings with me were either at Apo or Meridien…Yes, I am accusing him of sexual harassment.”

But Akpabio, in a statement by his media aide, described the allegations as “litany of lies.” It further said that Nunieh’s attacks were both personal and sponsored.

Willy Amadi

Chief Willie Amadi was an appointee of President Muhammadu Buhari. He is a lawyer and was a Federal Commissioner, Imo State Office of the Public Complaint Commission.

In January 2021, he was embroiled in a sex controversy when a leaked video of him surfaced. In the 12-second video, Amadi was seen in a room with two girls making out.

A few days after the video went viral, an Imo State Magistrates’ Court convicted Peter Nwoke, a 20-year-old school leaver, of superimposing an image of Amadi onto a video of the two women in order to blackmail the President’s appointee.

According to sources, Nwoke made the candid declaration that he superimposed his film onto another after being intimidated and promised millions of naira.

However, a Lagos-based forensic expert, Gbenro Akinyomi, after the analysis of the video using an InVID software, said it showed it was not superimposed.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Hilda Dokubo, a famous Nollywood actress, called for more investigation into the issue, claiming that the accused may have been coerced into confessing to a crime.

According to Dokubo, the young guy could not have committed such a crime because there was no technology at the time to superimpose a photo on a video or motion picture.
