Mr Bukola Saraki, former Senate President, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to PREMIUM TIMES, Saraki is being held by the EFCC on suspicion of theft and money laundering.

Mr Saraki was detained on Saturday, according to the report.

Mr Saraki spent a significant amount of time as Senate President between 2015 and 2019 dealing with allegations of corruption and false asset declaration. In June 2018, the Supreme Court acquitted him.

In this new case with the EFCC, however, Mr Saraki is expected to answer questions about alleged theft and laundering of public funds through a network of cronies and proxy companies.

The suspected proxies, who allegedly executed purported contracts for Kwara State under Mr Saraki, allegedly made returns to the former governor for many years, forming an organized network of dirty money flow.

According to sources, the funds involved were massive, amounting to hundreds of millions of naira and hundreds of thousands of foreign currencies at various times.

According to reports, EFCC investigators obtained a list of the proxy companies involved and examined a pattern of suspicious transactions involving them and Mr. Saraki.

According to the report, one of Saraki’s proxy companies is in charge of funding Mr Saraki’s lifestyle, including paying over a hundred million to settle rent and renovation bills at Mr Saraki’s Maitama residence.
