Princess Omonigho Oribhabor-Obiefuna will be running for the governorship of Edo State on the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

The renowned philantrophist formally declared her ambition during a visit to the Edo State NNPP secretariat in Benin City on Saturday.

Declaring her ambition to the party’s State Executive Committee and Edo South Senatorial District, she reaffirmed her desire for a better Edo State.

Princess Omonigho Oribhabor-Obiefuna hails from the Edo Central zone of Edo State.

According to the female aspirant, her desire to be the next Governor of Edo State in 2024 is fired by the urge to help resolve the state’s numerous challenges, especially in the area of economy and education.

Princess Omonigho Oribhabor-Obiefuna is a seasoned architect with decades of expertise in the construction sector.

Due to litigation and judicial decisions, Edo is one of eight states conducting off-cycle governorship elections. Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo are the others.

The Edo Election is slated to hold on Saturday 21st September 2024.

Party primaries will hold from 1st – 24th February 2024 while the submission of the list of nominated candidates via the online portal will start at 9.00am on 4th March 2024 and close at 6.00pm on 24th March 2024.

The final list of candidates will be published on 23rd April 2024 while campaign in public by political parties commences on 24th April 2024 and ends 24 hours prior to election day on 19th September 2024.

If Princess Omonigho Obiefuna becomes governor, she won’t be the first. A female governor was appointed in Nigeria once, but she was not elected.

This occurred in November 2006, when Virginia Etiaba took over as governor of Anambra following the impeachment of the incumbent, Peter Obi.

She resigned in February 2007, when a judicial judgment overturned his expulsion.
